Washington D.C. – On March 14, 2005, Governor Mike Huckabee (AK), chairman of the Education Commission of the States (ECS), appointed 8th District Senator David P. Sokola to the Arts Education Commission. The commission will serve as the advisory board for the ECS initiative, “The Arts—A Lifetime of Learning.”

The initiative is designed to mobilize state policymakers to ensure students have access to high-quality arts education. Senator Sokola said “I’m honored by Governor Huckabee’s invitation to participate.” He will be joining the group at their first meeting on Wednesday, April 6, during the ECS Spring Steering Committee meeting in Little Rock, Arkansas.

ECS is a national, nonprofit organization that helps governors, legislators, state education officials and others identify, develop and implement public policies to improve student l earning at all levels. A nonpartisan organization, ECS was formed in 1965 and is located in Denver, Colorado.

Sokola, who chairs the Delaware Senate Education Committee, has been a commissioner of ECS since 1993.  He currently serves as Vice-Chairman of the Education Commission of the States.  This newest appointment highlights Senator Sokola’s continued commitment to improving education, not just in the State of Delaware, but nationwide. Sokola also chairs the Community/County Affairs Committee and serves on the Administrative Services, Banking, Insurance and Elections, Small Business and Sunset Committees. He has been representing the 8th Senate District since 1990.
